The Air Force, in that same period, has flown thousands of hurricane flights in its Lockheed WC-130s, also without a single fatality. Both sets of planes were designed for the military: the P-3 is like a flying tank, Marks told me; the WC-130 is more like a flying barn. Commercial jets are built for lighter duty, and they try to steer clear of hurricanes. But how will they fare in a windier world?
